Alexandra Scott Billings (born March 28, 1962) is an American actress, professor, guitarist, and activist.

Billings is one of the first openly transgender people to play a transgender character on television, as she did in the 2005 made-for-TV film Romy and Michele: In The Beginning.

In addition, she is known for portraying Davina in the Amazon series Transparent, and she has played transgender characters in ER, Eli Stone, How to Get Away with Murder and Grey's Anatomy.

Early life

Billings was born in Illinois into a multiracial family; she is of European American, African American, and Native American descent. Robert Billings, Billings' father, was a music teacher at Los Angeles Harbor College and the artistic director for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, which inspired her passion for theater. She assisted onstage with Carol Burnett and Yul Brynner, as she appeared backstage. The Smell of the Crowd and Jesus Christ Superstar also appeared in The Roar of the Greasepaint and The Roar of the Crowd. Billings suffered with homelessness, heroin, and opioid use in her early adult life, and she worked in sex for a brief period of time.

Personal life

Billings and her partner Chrisanne, whom she first met in drama class at age 14, live in Hollywood, California. On December 4, 1995, they were married in a vow ceremony in Chicago. Billings was chosen Grand Marshal for the Pride Parade in Chicago, Illinois, on June 28, 2009.

In 1980, Billings began to move from male to female. She has been living with HIV since 1985, and has been a leader for HIV-related initiatives, as well as trans rights and trans rights. When talking about her fight against AIDS, she says she believes the reason she has survived all these years is because of her husband who stood by her, loved her, and helped her through it all. In a series of interviews, including a 2016 story for her hometown paper, she has discussed living with HIV. In addition, she appeared in POZ magazine in 2003 for an article about living with HIV. This Time for Me: A Memoir was published in 2022 by the author.

Billings appeared on stage as Shanté at the famed Baton Show Lounge in Chicago, Illinois, where she impersonated Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, and Liza Minnelli in the early 1980s. She was named Miss Wisconsin, Miss New York, Miss Chicago, Miss Illinois, and Miss Florida after winning a string of beauty competitions. In 2000 and 2001, she served as a judge for the Miss Continental pageant.

Billings' most notable performances have been in Chicago theaters, including The Bailiwick Theater, Light Opera Works, Court Theatre, and Steppenwolf Theatre. She has worked on stage with such writers as Larry Kramer, Tina Landau, and Jamie Pachino. For her appearance in Chicago, she has been given one Joseph Jefferson Award and five After Dark Awards. Her one-person autobiographical performance has appeared in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and off Broadway. She is a former artistic associate of About Face Theatre.

Billings is also a professional singer who appears in theaters and nightclubs around the country. In 2003, she released her second album The Story Goes On. In 2004, she was named recipient of the New York MAC Hanson Award for Cabaret Artist of the Year.

Billings have made their way into "S/He and Me," an autobiographical series. She appeared in The Nap at The Theatre Club in fall 2018 and was one of the first openly trans people to be cast in a trans role on Broadway.

Billings would appear in the Broadway musical Wicked in September 2019. She is the first openly transgender person to appear in the film. Billings appeared on Good Morning America in fall 2021, including Wicked, after the closing of Broadway during the COVID-19 pandemic. Billings has revived Morrible's role as of fall 2021.

"Schoolboy to Showgirl: The Alexandra Billings Story" was a documentary produced in the early 2000s by WTTW, the PBS station in Chicago.

At the Steppenwolf Summer School, she has taught Viewpoints, a stage technique and approach. She has taught at Louis University, The University of Chicago, Illinois University, Act One Studios, the Illinois Theatre Convention, Act One Studios, and various classes and workshops throughout Chicago, as well as the Steppenwolf School West in Los Angeles, California.

Billings is a theatre professor at the University of Southern California's Los Angeles. She was an assistant professor at California State University, Long Beach, before starting at USC. She earned her MFA from CSULB and gave the commencement address to CSULB College of the Arts in 2015.
