Alexander Kluge Career

Early life, education and early career

Kluge was born in Halberstadt, Germany, Province of Saxony (now Saxony-Anhalt).

He studied history, law, and music at the University of Marburg, Germany, and Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, after gaining prominence during World War II. In 1956, he received his doctorate by law.

Kluge befriended philosopher Theodor W. Adorno, who was teaching at the Institute for Social Research or Frankfurt School, while studying in Frankfurt. Kluge began writing his first stories during this period while working as a legal advisor for the Institute. He began to investigate filmmaking at Adorno's suggestion, and Adorno introduced him to German filmmaker Fritz Lang, for whom Kluge was an assistant on the construction of The Tiger of Eschnapur.
