Alexander Hleb Career

Club career

Alexander and his younger brother Vyacheslav were signed by German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart in 2000 for about €150,000. In an away match at 1. 0 on September 5, 2000, he made his Bundesliga debut on September 5th. For the last 20 minutes, FC Kaiserslautern has been as a substitute. Despite only appearing in six league appearances during his first season with Stuttgart, Hleb made the club a regular player in his second season and went on to establish himself as a key player for the team. In 2002, he was named Belarusian Footballer of the Year.

Stuttgart finished runners-up in the Bundesliga in 2002-03 and won a UEFA Champions League match over Manchester United and Hleb, the team's playmaker had been named as the team's playmaker. Felix Magath, the team's manager, left Bayern Munich in the summer of 2004, but Stuttgart was not as successful under new coach Matthias Sammer, having finished the 2004-05 season in fifth place.

Hleb joined Arsenal in June 2005 for a sum that had the potential to reach €15 million on a four-year basis. Arsène Wenger played Hleb at various midfield positions, but he mainly played on Arsenal's right wing. In August 2005, his competitive debut against Chelsea was made, then he made his league debut against Newcastle United as a replacement. Hleb sustained a knee injury while on international service with Belarus and was out for several months, making his return to the first team squad in December and playing 60 minutes in Arsenal's final UEFA Champions League group stage match against Ajax on December 7th. In a 7–0 victory over Middlesbrough, Hleb had established himself as a first choice player and scored his first goal for Arsenal. Hleb became the first Belarusian footballer to play in the Champions League final in May. He ended the season with 40 appearances and three goals.

Despite a hamstring injury, Hleb made 48 appearances in the 2006-07 season and scored three goals. He was shifted from the right wing to Robin van Persie as a withdrawn striker in 2007-08. When strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Eduardo recovered from injuries, Arsène Wenger reverted to a 4–4–2 formation and Hleb returned to playing on the wing. After being suspended for three games by the FA after being charged with criminal activity in a match with Graeme Murty of Reading, their 2–0 win, his season was cut short. He confessed to his offence, putting an end to his season.

A medical examination was carried out on July 16, 2008, with his transfer completed later that day for a €15 million plus an additional €20 million (which they did in 2008–09), bringing his total fee to €17 million). Hleb also agreed to a four-year deal with a buy-out guarantee of €90 million.

Since playing irregularly for the team in La Liga for the first five games, Hleb said he would happily take a Bayern Munich bid if such a chance arises in the summer. "I am right in the best years of my career, and I don't want to spend those years on bench," he said. Bayern Munich is a unique club, and their interest in me is a wonderful honor. Bayern is one of the world's best teams.

In his first season with Barcelona, Hleb won the 2008–09 treble. Hleb appeared in the Copa del Rey final for a brief period, but did not participate in the final when Barcelona defeated Manchester United 2–0.

Hleb turned down the chance to join Internazionale, the eventual 2009-10 champions, and opted to join VfB Stuttgart on loan at the end of the season.

In July 2009, Hleb returned to VfB Stuttgart on a one-year loan. In the first game of the 2009–10 Bundesliga season, Hleb played 55 minutes away against VfL Wolfsburg, a match that Stuttgart lost 2–0. Hleb scored his first goal for Stuttgart during a Champions League qualifier against Timișoara, which was a 2–0 away victory for the German side, after being involved in Stuttgart's 4–2 victory over SC Freiburg.

Hleb returned to England on August 31 by signing a season-long loan contract with Premier League club Birmingham City. In a 3–1 loss at West Bromwich Albion, an ankle injury sustained on international service postponed his debut until September 18th, when he played 83 minutes. Birmingham beat Milton Keynes Dons 3-1 in the League Cup three days after he opened the scoring. His season was interrupted by injuries, causing him to miss Birmingham's victory over Arsenal in the League Cup final. He ruled out a return to the club after his loan term was completed, implying that their style of football was not to his liking, although he preferred to remain in the Premier League, perhaps at Arsenal.

On August 31, 2011, Hleb was loaned out to VfL Wolfsburg. He continued his playing career at Wolfsburg despite being forced to make only one start and three appearances as a replacement. On December 31, 2011, the club announced that he will end the loan at the end of the term.

Since Hleb's loan with Barcelona was terminated by mutual consent during the January 2012 transfer window, he signed with Russian Premier League club Krylia Sovetov Samara until the end of the season.

In his return season, Hleb signed a BATE Borisov contract and won the 2012 Belarusian Premier League. Hleb said before BATE's 3–1 victory over Bayern Munich that he hoped that his team's good results in the Champions League would help him earn a move abroad, with the player wishing to move to a Bundesliga club. However, he continued to play for BATE in the 2013 season.

Hleb signed a one-and-a-year contract with Torku Konyaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig on January 4, 2014, with the option to prolong the contract for an additional year. Hleb left Konyaspor for Süper Lig competitors Gençlerbirli in February 2015. Borisov, Krylia Sovetov Samara, and Isloch Minsk Raion all had spells with him at the end of his club career.

International career

Hleb earned over 20 caps for the Belarus under-21 team. In a 1–0 loss to Wales in 2001, he made his full international debut as a substitute. In a 5–2 victory over Hungary in April 2002, he scored on his second international debut. Due to the fact that Belarus defeated the tournament, he scored a goal in the finals of the 2002 LG Cup. Former Belarusian captain Sergei Gurenko launched a scathing attack on Hleb for not being diligent in national team settings in November 2006. Hleb, on the other hand, denied any suggestion that he was a "prima donna." Despite the scathing feedback, Bernd Stange, the current national team's head coach, appointed him as the team's captain in August 2007. In a 2–1 victory over Israel on August 22, Hleb wore the captain's armband for the first time. In 2008, he was part of the team at the triumphant friendly Malta International Football Tournament. He has received 80 caps overall.

What happened to the Man United and Arsenal stars from their 2008 Premier League title battle?

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 21, 2023
Manchester United's ride to Arsenal on Sunday has heightened the possibility that few would have predicted would be a pivotal game in the title race ahead of the season's debut. Flashback 15 years ago, Old Trafford hosted a pivotal match, with the Red Devils coming from behind to defeat the Gunners 2-1 and move six points forward in their largely successful pursuit of their 10th Premier League title. It was a game studded with some of the best talent English football had to offer, but where are the players from that match now?

Arsenal takes on Manchester United in the biggest Premier League match since 2008

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 20, 2023
Manchester United's ride to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon looks to be one of the season's biggest match clashes. Two of the world's biggest clubs facing off in a potential Premier League title clash - both teams rejuvenated and playing an exciting brand of football under top quality managers - there's nothing quite like it! This is perhaps bizarre, given the fact that both sides of England football have fought each other since 2008, with the first Arsenal vs. Manchester United match in 15 years despite their illustrious pasts and seeming hegemony at the top table.
