Alex Newell Career

Career

In 2011, Newell was one of 34,000 people to film an audition video for Oxygen's The Glee Project's first season. Over one million MySpace views, as well as a spot among the 12 participants competing for a seven-episode arc on Glee, were earned by Newell's self-taped audition. They characterized themselves as an out gay man throughout the course of the story. They became the series's first runner-up eventually. Nonetheless, the producers were so impressed that they decided to bring them on Glee for two episodes. In the third season episode "Saturday Night Glee-ver," Newell appeared on Glee for the first time. They were cast in Wade "Unique" Adams, a transgender teenager who was expected male at birth. The shy, outcast Wade portrayed their feminine identity through music as the bold, brave alter ego, Unique. Wade broke ground by being one of television's most popular transgender characters and one of the first on a network prime time program. "Bod" was a term used to describe Newell's appearance, with "remarkable patience and a natural vocal presence."

Bill O'Reilly said on his nightly show that children watching the show unsupervised may be encouraged to try out "alternative lifestyles," which he referred to as "alternative lifestyles." "If Bill O'Reilly said something about you," Newell replied, "you're doing something right." He just told the public and conservative viewers that he had just shown me. More people are seeing me now... Wade and Unique are two characters, [they're] being themselves." If kids want to go out and do this, they are expressing who they are." They appeared in two more episodes and concluded their story arc this season.

Newell was accepted into Berklee College of Music for fall 2012, but when it was asked to return to Los Angeles to be on Glee, they decided to go to Los Angeles for the show's fourth season. In the fourth season premiere, "The New Rachel," Unique appeared in Glee as a recurring cast member. In 2012, Newell, along with the rest of the cast, received a Screen Actor Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, but the project was sadly lost to Modern Family. Because of the character's fame, Newell was promoted to main cast for the fifth season. Newell did not appear as a regular guest star on the sixth and final season, but did appear as a recurring guest star. Newell's "I Know Where I've Been" from Hairspray with the Transperson Choir of 200 performers was a highlight of the sixth season.

Newell has performed at many festivals, including the Coachella Festival, but also at several LGBT festivals and pride festivals over the years. They also appeared at the Governors Ball Music Festival and BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.

In October 2013, Newell revealed that they had been signed by Big Beat Records and that Newell's debut album would be released. It was also announced that Adam Anders would produce it. On June 3, 2014, the band's debut single, a remix of Sigma's "Nobody to Love," was released.

Newell embarked on a line of cover songs and collaborations in 2015. They provided feature vocals for the re-issued version of "Stronger," a Clean Bandit song, in March. They produced a disco-house stylization of Robin S.'s single "Show Me Love" later this month together with Russian DJ Matvey Emerson. They collaborated with British electro duo Blonde over the summer by including vocals in their song "All Cried Out." The Knocks were prompted to collaborate on the album "Collect My Love," a soaring disco standout" where they hit "staggering heights." The EP So Classics' debut album 55 will be released in March 2016. Newell also released a cover of the song "O Come All Ye Faithful" for Christmas.

The media has embraced their original song "This Ain't Over" from January 2016, which has been warmly welcomed by the media. "The vivacious dance-pop album has magnificently revived disco, even though it was just for a few minutes." Newell, who does not have the gimmicks of mass produced radio pop, continues to delight This Ain't Over with pure talent." "Newell's unbridled voice is in full force on 'This Ain't Over,' shining out like a heralded triumphant beacon over a thumping, glamorous dance-pop soundscape,' according to Spin. "This is just diva vocal acrobatics flexed with the swag of a queen," Vulture said.

"This Ain't Over" was announced as the first track off the pop band's debut extended play called Power, which featured work from Diane Warren, Nile Rodgers, MNEK, and DJ Cassidy. Big Beat will debut the EP on February 19.

Adam Lambert, a fellow Glee alum, appeared on tour from February 23 to the Los Angeles Orpheum Theatre in 2016. Newell recorded "Kill the Lights," a new album in collaboration with Power producers DJ Cassidy and Nile Rodgers, which was released on April 8, 2016 by Atlantic Records. It was expected to be one of a few tracks being produced by Newell as part of the HBO TV series Vinyl, and it was expected to be one of a few tracks. It was later revealed that the song had been recorded the previous year while Newell was playing with Clean Bandit, Blonde, and The Knocks, sparking the designers to collaborate with them on their debut extended play. The album was released later this month, with vocals from Jess Glynne.

After the success and introduction of Newell's debut extended play Power and their tour with Adam Lambert, Newell returned to the studio. They released "Need Somebody," their first single outside of their latest project. It was exclusive to iTunes and Apple Music on June 3 and then announced on other platforms a few days later. In addition, the proceeds from its first week of sales were going to be donated to the Trevor Project. The song was later discovered to be the lead single from Newell's debut album, and it would be announced later this year.

In their biggest collaboration to date, Newell has provided vocal support for vocalists in "Hands," a charity project. Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, and BloodPop wrote the song, which was also produced by Tranter and BloodPop, as well as Mark Ronson. It features Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Meghan Trainor, Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, Kevin Blige, John Blige, Imagine Dragons, Jennifer Lopez, P.NK, MNEK, RuPaul, Mary Lambert, and Nate Ruess.

Asaka appeared in the revival of Once on This Island for the first time in 2017. They began training with NYC voice coach Mike Ruckles in preparation. Newell also marked their return as a featured artist on Kokiri's album "Other Side of Love."

They currently appear on NBC's Extraordinary Playlist as Mo, a genderfluid DJ and the protagonist's next-door neighbor.

In NBC's comedy pilot Imaginary Friend, which was supposed to air in 2016, Newell appeared in the principal role. It was already a tradition, and no other network wanted to make it into a series. They performed on a track that also featured DJ Cassidy and Jess Glynne, and they also appeared on HBO TV series Vinyl.

They have pledged to supporting other LGBT people and have performed at benefit concerts, most notably for The Trevor Project, the Human Rights Campaign, Jack Antonoff's Ally Coalition, and other fundraisers.

At the 2015 GLAAD Media Awards, Newell was given a special recognition award.
