Career
Medina began working in student films at the University of the Philippines' Diliman for fine arts majors. In 2008, he made his on-screen debut in the film Concerto. This film, set in the World War II period, was part of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and received accolades and praise.
Medina and Manny Valera signed a management agreement in 2009. He appeared in a number of films, including Fidel and Iliw.
He was in the film Ka Oryang in 2011, but when his later films received accolades both nationally and internationally, he was brought to the attention of many producers and independent film makers.

ABS-CBN selected Alex for the role of Diego in the hit prime time drama series Ina, Kapatid, Anak, his first television appearance, following his triumph. Medina's role was supposed to be played by Rayver Cruz but he had to cancel due to his busy schedule.
