Early years

Dreier, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, attended Stanford University, graduating in 1939. He then moved into journalism and was writing in Berlin for United Press when he joined NBC in 1941. During his year in Berlin, he was under intense surveillance by the Gestapo, and he left the city just a day before the Pearl Harbor attack.

His commentary appeared on NBC from 1942 to 1945, as well as weekdays from 1951 to 1956. Dreier, known as Chicago's "Man on the Go," was the city's top TV anchor during his time on NBC-owned WNBQ-TV, serving as a news reporter and anchor. He also did television's Today on the Farm from 1960-61. Floyd Kalber was promoted as a WMAQ anchor by 1962; he later transferred to ABC-owned-and-operated WBKB-TV.
