Career
While still enrolled at University of Southern California, Benjamin signed to Columbia Records. However, Columbia Records ended their relationship just weeks after he had released his album. Despite this, he embarked on a self-financed tour in Europe to open for Marina Kaye in France and Lea in Germany. He promoted his music by appearing in parking lots outside of concert halls and giving out business cards.
In the 12th season of America's Got Talent, Benjamin's song "I Built a Friend" was used as back-up for Merrick Hanna's contemporary dance audition. In addition, Hanna used Benjamin's "Lost Boy" to cover Ruth B's "Lost Boy" in his live quarter-final appearance later this season.
Narrated For You, Benjamin's mixedtape, debuted on the US Billboard 200 in 2019. The mixtape features the songs "Water Fountain" and "Let Me Down Slowly," the latter of which was later released as a single with Alessia Cara. "Can I Sing For You" was a coded word that was true to his roots while promoting the mixtape. The album features the single "Oh My God"; the song did not debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but it reached number 32 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart and number 26 on the Adult Top 40 charts, but a series he started with "I Built a Friend" and "Water Fountain" appeared on YouTube.
