Alec Benjamin Career

Career

While still enrolled at University of Southern California, Benjamin signed to Columbia Records. However, Columbia Records ended their relationship just weeks after he had released his album. Despite this, he embarked on a self-financed tour in Europe to open for Marina Kaye in France and Lea in Germany. He promoted his music by appearing in parking lots outside of concert halls and giving out business cards.

In the 12th season of America's Got Talent, Benjamin's song "I Built a Friend" was used as back-up for Merrick Hanna's contemporary dance audition. In addition, Hanna used Benjamin's "Lost Boy" to cover Ruth B's "Lost Boy" in his live quarter-final appearance later this season.

Narrated For You, Benjamin's mixedtape, debuted on the US Billboard 200 in 2019. The mixtape features the songs "Water Fountain" and "Let Me Down Slowly," the latter of which was later released as a single with Alessia Cara. "Can I Sing For You" was a coded word that was true to his roots while promoting the mixtape. People in public can view videos on YouTube in which he performs his written songs in acoustic to others on YouTube. He recorded two singles with Spotify Studios in NYC in 2019, one of which was a recreation of Eminem's "Stan" (edition). In 2019, he appeared at the music festival KAABOO in Del Mar, CA.

These Two Windows, Benjamin's debut album, was released on May 29, 2020. The album debuted on the US Billboard 200 at number 75. The album features the single "Oh My God"; the song did not debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but it reached number 32 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart and number 26 on the Adult Top 40 charts, but a series he started with "I Built a Friend" and "Water Fountain" appeared on YouTube. The videos reveal the history and the lyrics behind some of his most popular songs. (Un)Commentary) his second album (Un)Commentary) came after on April 15, 2022.

Benjamin has written songs for musicians including Jon Bellion, as well as a songwriting credit on Bellion's album The Human Condition's track "New York Soul (Part II)".

YouTube has used a recent feature, Dream Track, to create new songs. Dream Track, the Google-owned platform's equivalent to TikTok's that lets users post short videos, is now available in YouTube Shorts. Users just have to choose the artist they want to imitate from a prompt (such as 'upbeat' or 'ballad').
