Albert Stewart Life

Albert Stewart (April 9, 1900-September 23, 1965) was an American sculptor.

Life

He was born in Kensington, England.

He was born in 1908 and was orphaned shortly thereafter. Stewart was able to pursue his art education at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and the Art Students League of New York, two staples among young and impoverished sculptors of the day. Bechtel helped him gain some required commissions after finishing his studies.

Dr. George Frederick Kunz, the vice president of Tiffany & Co., assisted him in his death in 1932 and bequeathed "Albert T. Stewart, a friend and sculptor," five shares of non-par capital stock in Tiffany & Co.

He went to Canada and joined the Royal Air Force during World War I. When he returned from war, he served as an assistant to both Frederick MacMonnies and Paul Manship.

He started as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist in the 1930s. Stewart was often hired to create architectural sculptures throughout his career. He was named head of Scripps College's sculpture program in Claremont, California, at the invitation of Millard Sheets in 1939. He went to California and stayed there the remainder of his life.
