Albert Sidney Johnston (February 2, 1803-1862) served as a general in three armies: the Texian Army, the United States Army, and the Confederate States Army.
During his 34-year military service, he saw significant combat, including campaigns in the Black Hawk War, the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican–American War, the Utah War, and the American Civil War. Confederate States President Jefferson Davis was considered the best general officer in Confederacy before Robert E. Lee's appearance later in the Civil War at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862.

Early life and education
Johnston was born in Washington, Kentucky, and he was the youngest son of Dr. John and Abigail (Harris) Johnston. His father was a native of Salisbury, Connecticut. Albert Johnston was born in Kentucky but he spent a large portion of his life in Texas, which he considered his home. He was first educated at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he met fellow student Jefferson Davis. Davis, two years behind Johnston, was accepted to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, two years behind Johnston. In 1826, Johnston was the eighth of 41 students in his class's West Point cadets with a commission as a brevet second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry.
In 1832, Johnston was posted in New York and Missouri and served as the chief of staff to Bvt during the brief Black Hawk War. Brig. : Brig. Gen. Henry Atkinson.
