Career

He was born to a poor merchant's family. He developed an interest in acting and music as an infant by watching street performances and listening to dervishes' singing. His father died in 1920 and his siblings were raised by his mother, the tailor. He attended a drama club where he learned fundamentals of acting and theatre until age 15.

Alasgar Alakbarov obtained his postsecondary education at a Baku performance arts college in 1930. He appeared with the troupes in several Azerbaijan and Georgia theatres over the next three years. He appeared at the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre from 1933 to his death. He specialized in tragic roles. Vagif (Vagif by Samad Vurgun) and Othello were two of his most well-known roles (Othello by William Shakespeare). He played Vagif 700 times over his 30-year career. Critics also characterized his performance as both spirited and emotional.

Alakbarov also went back to film to work in theatre, as well as cinema. In 1929, Alakbarov's first film appearance was made in Vulkan uzarinda ev. He has appeared in well-known Azerbaijani films, including Latif, Almaz, Kandlilar, Ogey ana, Uzag sahillarda, Boyuk dayaq, and others. After attending a 1959 cultural festival in Moscow dedicated to the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, Alakbarov became People's Artist of the USSR.
