Brits bask in temperatures of 32C in hottest day of the year so far as Met Office issues official heatwave warning - but storms are on the way within hours

After weeks of unseasonably soggy weather, Britain basked in the hottest day of the year yesterday - and didn't we just revel in it. As temperatures soared to 32C in central London , the country now appears to be in the middle of an official heatwave, the Met Office confirmed. The national weather service said that it is likely to remain very warm for the next few days, although yellow weather warnings have been issued for thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. In the meantime sun worshippers flocked to beaches, pools and parks, with Brighton seeing record crowds.

Burgers, beers and ice creams fly off the shelves as Brits soak up hottest day of the year so far with barbecues and trips to the beach - but thunderstorms are on the way

As many as 150,000 packs of burgers are predicted to be flogged by Tesco alone - as they prepare to sell 450,000 packs of sausages and 150,000 packs of assorted barbeque meats as punters party under the sun. But their celebrations may be short-lived as thunderstorms are set to strike Britain from tomorrow, with 'danger to life' warnings over flooding following a day where the mercury has hit 32C (90F). Brits did not let this dampen their spirits today, however, as they flocked en-masse to fill beaches, parks and rivers with summer joy.

Don't rain on our heatwave! Thunderstorm warning issued and up to two inches of rain to drench South East England within hours as temperatures soar above 30C

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 30, 2024
Thunderstorms will strike Britain from tomorrow amid 'danger to life' warnings over flooding after the hottest day of the year so far today as temperatures hit 32C (90F). The Met Office said a generally dry day with lots of sunshine will develop into a hot afternoon today with the heat peaking in southern England and Wales. But while the sun is set to shine strongly, people may still need to keep a brolly close at hand - because thunderstorms are expected tomorrow and on Thursday. A 36-hour Met Office alert covers the South East from 12pm tomorrow and then widens out to most of England from midnight tonight for the whole of Thursday. Temperatures are forecast to peak in the South East today and tomorrow as Britons continue to bask in the heatwave, but then things look set to change abruptly. The Met Office said up to 50mm (2in) of rain could fall in two hours in the South East tomorrow, with a total of up to 90mm (3.5 inches) expected over a 24-hour period.
