Al Schnier Career

Music career

Schnier wrote his first original piece of music in 1978, of which a portion would later appear on his solo musical release al.one. During eighth grade, his first band, "Cuttin' Loose," was released. It was a Neil Young and Rush tribute band that appeared only two times. He performed in various cover bands in high school and college. When Schnier discovered the first original recordings by Moe (period absent until 1992), a band based in Buffalo, New York, he was playing in Unclaimed Freight, a psychedelic rock band based in Oneonta, New York. "I heard the tape," Al recalls, "and I thought, 'This is the kind of band I like to play in." Of course, I never thought I'd be playing with moe, but six months later, I wound up in Buffalo, and my new introduction to the band was actually sitting in with them." Schnier filled in for Dave Kessler in Moe in early 1991, playing electric guitar and congas at Chicklets House in Buffalo, New York. Schnier will occasionally appear with the band after this period, bringing a new guitar to Kessler and Chuck Garvey's set. Schnier joined the band in January 1992 but Kessler departed a few months later due to a lack of interest. To this day, Schnier is a resident of Moe, adding keyboards, acoustic guitar, and Moog to his repertoire.

Schnier has also been active in numerous side project groups. Al and the Transamericans, an American-influenced folk rock band, formed in 1999. He released "Analog" on his album and continues to perform sporadic shows with the group, often in or near his hometown of Utica.

Schnier began working on an electronica project he named al.one in July 2001. Schnier's name refers to the fact that he performs all instruments and duties on the album. The self-titled album was released in October 2001, and he has appeared in a few solo shows to promote the release.

Schnier and his partner, Diane, were able to produce an album based on her musical abilities in 2003. They released the album "Before Cowboys" over a year, with Diane playing piano, drums, and singing, while Schnier handled all other musical duties. Schnier has toured with his wife and a small group dubbed Before Cowboys and is currently working on a sequel.

Schnier has appeared on several shows with Phil Lesh and Friends, including in May 2005 for three shows in the San Francisco, California area. Schnier wrote about his time with Lesh as follows: "I'm a huge fan of the Dead," Schnier said of visiting the Grateful Dead rehearsal center and hanging out with Phil. We rehearsed for like, four or five days, and then we did three shows. It was amazing."

Schnier is an aspiring engineer and producer. He has designed and engineered all of his solo projects, as well as all of his wife's albums, as well as several moe. (Including some of the tracks on The Conch's) were among the featured projects). He has also worked on projects for other bands, including The Brakes & Okemah. In upstate New York, Schnier owns Basemental Studios.

Schnier is also a founding board member of Headcount, the voter registration organization.
