Al Ernest Garcia Career

Life and career

Al Ernest Garcia appeared in over 120 films between 1911 and 1938, many in supporting roles. Leo Carrillo and Warner Baxter were both actors who appeared in silent film westerns. In 1917, Garcia directed The Purple Scarf, but it was not his first film as a director. Garcia, a California boy, starred in several Mexican films and later portrayed Mexicans in American films. His roles were less prominent before the advent of sound film, but he continued as an actor until his death.

Garcia is best known for his friendship with Charlie Chaplin. In six films between 1921 and 1936, he appeared with Chaplin. Chaplin mainly appeared in scientific or villainous supporting roles. In The Circus (1928), Garcia portrayed the brutal circus director in The Circus (1928), the snobbish butler of the millionaire in City Lights (1931), and the factory operator in Modern Times (1936). He served as both a casting director and editor of Chaplin's The Circus, City Lights, and Modern Times. He sought better compensation and improved working conditions for supporting actors and bit players in films, and he was co-founder of the Motion Picture Extras and Supporting Players Association, which was founded in 1933.

Garcia died of a heart attack in Santa Monica, California, on September 4, 1938.
