Career
Khan was born in Lambeth, England, into a Dhaka family. At the age of seven, he began dancing and training in Kathak's traditional South Asian dance style. He began training with Pratap Pawar and later became his disciple. He began his stage career in the Adventures of Mowgli, 1986-1985, which later became Akademi South Asian Dance. He appeared in Peter Brook's Shakespeare Company production of Mahabharata, touring the world between 1989 and 1989, as well as in the televised version of the play broadcast in 1988.
Following later studies in Contemporary Dance at De Montfort University and Performing Arts as well as a time as a participant with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's Brussels-based X-Group project, he began presenting solo performances of his work in the 1990s.
He founded Akram Khan Company in August 2000, alongside former dancer Farooq Chaudhry. Kaash, his first full-length work involving Anish Kapoor and Nitin Sawhney, was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002.
He gave a recital with Pandit Birju Maharaj and Sri Pratap Pawar, as well as a late associate artist at the Southbank Centre; and A God of Small Stories, a piece for mature women for which he collaborated with writer Hanif Kureishi. He was an associate artist at the Southbank Centre until April 2005, the first non-musician to be granted this status, and he currently works as an associate artist at Sadler's Wells Theatre. In 2005, he was elected a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2005 New Year Honours for his dedication to dancing.
In 2008, he co-starred with Juliette Binoche in an experimental ballet work called in-i at the Royal National Theatre in London.
In summer 2006, Khan was invited by Kylie Minogue to choreograph a portion of her Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour. Khan appeared as a major inspiration behind the singer when she appeared. The songs were set in an Indian temple setting, influenced by Minogue's visit to Sri Lanka. He has created pieces for Taiwan's Ballet Boyz and Cloud Gate Dance Theater.
Khan and his dance company appeared at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. "Abide With Me" by Emeli Sandé performed live music.
For the first time, he choreographed for a ballet company called Dust in 2014, a World War I-themed ballet titled Dust for the English National Ballet. Khan and Tamara Rojo appeared in lead roles.
The Manchester International Festival has announced a co-production of Giselle starring English National Ballet and Sadler's Wells Theatre, which was directed by Khan and performed at the Palace Theatre, Manchester in September 2016. Later this year, the critically acclaimed performance in Bristol Hippodrome, the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, and Sadler's Wells Theatre, London.
