Akira Ioane Life

Akira Ioane, who was born 16 June 1995, is a New Zealand rugby union player.

Ioane is the blindside flanker and number eight for the Auckland rugby union team in the Mitre 10 Cup, and he was selected for the All Blacks in 2017, having previously represented New Zealand in Sevens and the Maori All Blacks.

Early life and family

Ioane, born in Auckland on June 16, 1995, is the older brother of current All Blacks squad member Rieko Ioane. Eddie Ioane's father played for Samoa at the 1991 Rugby World Cup, and his mother Sandra Wihongi is a former Black Fern. Eddie played rugby for Ricoh shortly after Akira's birth, for four years. Ioane's ties to the Te Who-Apanui and Ngphuti iwi are of Mori and Samoan descent. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School.

Rugby career

Ioane joined the New Zealand sevens team in 2014 and made his New Zealand sevens debut in 2014 at the Wellington Sevens. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he was a member of the All Blacks Sevens squad. In the 2015 Wellington Sevens, Ioane competed for the New Zealand Sevens Squad. In New Zealand's vs. South Africa, he was named Player of the Finals. Ioane appeared for the New Zealand Sevens Squad for Sydney Sevens in 2016. He was named Player of the Finals in the Sevens Tournament, while his Brother Reiko Ioane was named Player of the Tournament against Australia.

Ioane started for the Mori All Blacks against the touring British and Irish Lions during a 10–32 loss at the Rotorua International Stadium on June 17, 2017. Ioane had a full 80 minutes against the Lions.

Ioane was called up to the All Blacks as injury cover for Blues teammate Jerome Kaino when on tour with the Mori All Blacks in 2017. In the 53rd minute of a 28–23 victory over a French XV, Ioane made his international debut for New Zealand on November 14, 2017, swapping Liam Squire for the in-form Highlanders flanker.

Ioane was selected in Ian Foster's first All Blacks squad for the 2020 Rugby Championship following the reduced Super Rugby season and Super Rugby Aotearoa, as well as his appearance in the 2020 North vs South match.

After a spectacular appearance at the 2014 Wellington Sevens, he earned a Blues contract for 2015. Peter Saili had to leave France due to a work change. On the 2/5/15, he had 12 carries for 118 meters, including a try from 55 meters out.

Ioane started the Blues' historic 22–16 win over the British and Irish Lions on June 7, 2017 with injury to Jerome Kaino. Ioane did well, but Steven Luatua's departure made it all the more impressive.

Ioane has been a regular starter for the Blues since 2017 and is one of the top try-scorers of the 2018 season. Ioane has scored six goals in the 2018 Super Rugby season and has scored the most tries of any forward.

Ioane was kicked out of the Blues' first matches of the Super Rugby 2020 season.
