Ajay Kalahastri Naidu (born February 12, 1972) is an American actor best known for his appearance in Office Space as Samir Amir.

Early life and education

Naidu was born in Evanston, Illinois. In 1964, his parents came from India to the United States. He attended Evanston Township High School. At Harvard University, he studied at the American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training.

Personal life

Heather Burns, a Canadian actress, is married to Naidu. Jaan Burns, the couple's son, has been living in the house.

Career

Naidu's first professional acting work, which he obtained from an open call, was a leading role opposite Michael Keaton in the 1986 film Touch and Go. This was followed by an ABC Afterschool Special Episode, "No Greater Gift" (1985), where he played Nick Santana, a 12-year-old boy with a terminal illness. Naidu first appeared in "To Be a Man" on MacGyver TV in 1986.

Where the River Runs Black (1986), Charles Durning and Vice Versa (1988), are among other early film credits. He appeared extensively in classical theatre between 1988 and 1995.

Naidu returned to film in 1996 with Richard Linklater's SubUrbia, for which he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and competed against Samuel L. Jackson, Roy Scheider, and Jason Lee.

Naidu appeared in films including K-Pax, Subway Stories, The War Within, Requiem for a Dream, Requiem for a Dream, The Guru, Waterborne, and Loins of Punjab Presents. He co-starred as a series regular on LateLine and appeared on television dramas titled The Sopranos, The West Wing, and Bored to Death.

Naidu has been active in the Asian underground music scene for many years as both a breakdancer and an M.C. His vocals have appeared on many albums, most notably Talvin Singh's "OK" winner.

Naidu produced his first feature film Ashes in 2006, which was released in 2010 and for which he received Best Actor accolades from the MIACC Film Festival in New York and the London Asian Film Festival.

The Kid Stays in the Photograph at the Royal Court Theatre, The Master and Margarita with Complicity, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui alongside Al Pacino, directed by Simon McBurney, and The Little Flower of East Orange with Ellyn Burstyn at New York's Public Theater directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman are among Naidu's most recent theatre performances. Darwaza, Naidu's solo theatre work, was a sell-out success at Labyrinth Theatre in New York, where he is also a member of the company.

The Excellence in Performing Arts Award was given to Naidu by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White in 2019.
