Political career
Chaudhary took on politics as president of the University of Engineering and Technology's student union. He was later identified with Islami Jamiat Tulaba, the right-wing Jamat-i-Islami's student wing.
He became a member of the National Assembly for the first time after winning constituency NA-117 of Narowal in 1993. He served as Policy and Public Affairs Assistant to then Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1993.
For the second time in 1997 Pakistan's general election, he was re-elected as the member of the National Assembly for the second time. Chaudhary played a key government role when his party, PML-N, secured a clear majority in National Assembly for the first time in Pakistani history, while others in the political tradition. He was named as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of Pakistan with the rank of Minister of State, Chairman Pakistan's Engineering Council, and he served as a chairman for the National Steering Committees on Information Technology, IQM, and Productivity. Chaudhary continued on the positions that had been allotted to him until the 1999 Pakistani coup d'état, in which Pervez Musharraf, then Chief of Army Staff, overthrew elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his newly elected government. He was disqualified from the National Assembly in 2002 Pakistan's general election. Chaudhary taught administration at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University in Islamabad from 2000 to 2007. Chaudhary is considered a faithful Nawaz Sharif who helped the PML-N survive during the Musharraf reign.
Chaudhary was re-elected as the representative of the National Assembly for the third time in 2008. He served as the Minister of Education in Pakistan for a short time, as well as the Minister of Minorities' Affairs in the Gillani ministry. However, after PML-N decided to sit on opposition benches due to a rift with PPP over the reinstatement of the judges that was deposed by former President Pervez Musharraf in 2007, he resigned six weeks into the newly formed PPP-led coalition government.

Chaudhary was elected by the Central parliamentary board of Pakistan in 2013 as part of PML-N's central parliamentary board, which was charged with selecting candidates for the national election. He was appointed as the Minister of Planning and Development as well as the Deputy Chairman of Pakistan's Planning Commission.
Chaudhary was appointed as the United Nations Development Programme's "champion minister" from the Asia Pacific region in February 2016 for his efforts to promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
Following Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation as a result of the Panama Papers case decision, the federal cabinet, which included Chaudhary, was disbanded in July 2017. Chaudhary was voted Prime Minister of Pakistan following Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's assassination of his son. He was then called Minister of Interior for the first time. He was given the additional charge of Ministry of Planning and Development on September 16, 2017. In November 2017, he was chastised by the Chairman of the Senate for not taking Senate in confidence in connection with the crackdown on the 2017 Tehreek-Labaik resistance that resulted in the departure of Minister of Law and Justice, Zahid Hamid. Chaudhry resigned as Federal Minister for Interior and Federal Minister for Planning, Growth and Reform upon the dissolution of the National Assembly on the expiration of its term on May 31, 2018.
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, he was re-elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of PML-N from Constituency NA-78 (Narowal-II). He obtained 159,651 votes and defeated Abrar-ul-Haq.
Since NAB refused to bring up a lawsuit against him, he was arrested by NAB on December 23, 2019.
