Ahmed Best (born August 19, 1973) is an American actor, voice actor, and singer.
Jar Jar Binks' character was first recognized in 1999 for his gesture capture and voice.
He also wrote, directed, and produced his own TV show, titled This Can't Be My Life. In three films and seven episodes of the cartoon series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Best collaborated with director George Lucas.
In Robot Chicken: Episode II, he received the Annie Award for Voice Acting in an Animated Television Production for lampooning Jar Binks.
Early life
Ahmed Best was born in New York City on August 19, 1973. He spent the majority of his formative years in the Bronx's Soundview section before transferring to Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1984. He attended Columbia High School, graduating in 1991. He later studied percussion at the Manhattan School of Music.
He is Dunia Best Sinnreich, lead singer and co-founder of Brave New Girl, Dubistry and Agent 99, and formerly with the Slackers.
Career
Best joined the jazz band The Jazzhole in 1994. He was instrumental in the company's growth for two years. He co-wrote and co-produced three albums for the group, including The Jazzhole, And the Feeling Goes Around, and The Beat is the Bomb. Bill Evans co-wrote and coproduced Escape in 1995.
He appeared on Stomp's winning cast in 1995. He toured with Stomp's cast members both in the United States and Europe.
Ahmed was cast as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005), after casting director Robin Gurland had noticed his flexible, athletic movements in Stomp. He appeared on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars (as well as its sequel), Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Stephen Colbert's The Colbert Report. Best said he put a lot of himself into the role, so if Jar Jar drew hostility from audiences, it was often directed at the actor or otherwise interpreted it personally. Best considered suicide because Jar Jar Binks' character was so disliked. On the TV show Big Time Rush, the best later appeared with fellow Star Wars veterans Dee Bradley Baker, James Arnold Taylor, and Daran Norris.
He also wrote, directed, and produced the pilot for a television show called This Can't Be My Life in 2008.
