Agnes Chan Career

Career

Agnes Chan started playing guitar in her junior highs in Hong Kong as part of her fundraising activities. She had a chance to film a cover of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game" with her older sister, actress Irene Chan, and Hong Kong made it a hit song. Through many of Chang Cheh's films, including Young People and The Generation Gap, she became well-known throughout southeast Asia.

Chan's interpretation of "The Circle Game" (1971) was completely different from Mitchell's version, but it was still very close to Buffy Sainte-Marie's 1968 version. Many in Hong Kong mistook Chan for the original composer, but she had yet to clarify by mentioning Mitchell or Sainte-Marie in her numerous Cantonese public interviews.

Masaaki Hirao, a Japanese singer and songwriter, brought Chan to Japan, and she released "Poppy Flower (), her first Japanese pop hit in 1972. Her vivacious voice, stunning looks, and imperfect Japanese made her a teenage idol. "Splendor in the Grass," her third single, earned her the "Rookie of the Year" award in 1973. She graduated from The American School in Japan in 1973.

She appeared on "Poppy Flower ()" on NHK in 1973 and then made two more appearances on the show in a row.

Chan enrolled in Sophia University in Tokyo and studied for two years, after which she decided to take a break from the entertainment business and study social psychology at the University of Toronto in Canada.

Chan returned to Japan to resurrect her singing career after graduating in 1978. In 1979, she first Cantonese album was released in Hong Kong. For her peace thesis for International Youth Year 1984, she received a prize. In 1985, she appeared at her first Chinese concert, a benefit for Soong Ching-ling's children's fund, at a Beijing suburb.

Chan's 1984 visit to Ethiopia during a severe drought and food shortage was covered for the Nippon Television Network's annual "24-Hour TV" charity special. She returned to volunteer work after these events as she continued her entertainment career.

Chan met her former boss, Tsutomu Kaneko, in 1986 and gave birth to her eldest son in Canada. As she returned to Japan next year, she would bring her infant along to the office, which was seen as highly controversial ("Agnes" became a buzzword in Japan) and sparked the question of a mother's place in the workplace.

Chan began studying with Stanford University's department of education in 1989. Myra H. Strober investigated the lives of ten graduates from Tokyo University and Stanford ten years after they graduated. Chan earned her Ph.D. in 1994, establishing significant differences between the men and women of Japan and the United States. Chan, a scholar and essayist, has returned to Japan as a lecturer, essayist, and professor.

Chan was appointed first ambassador of the Japan Committee for UNICEF in 1998, established as a separate non-governmental group in Japan under an agreement with UNICEF.

Chan's education had a major influence on her singing career: by 2000, her albums had a more mellow tone:

Chan began her career as a novelist with Perfect Couple and Bullet Ring in 2002.

In 2005, Chan released "Splendor in the Grass," her first self-cover single, as well as Asahi beverage, which was used in an herbal-tea commercial. "Flower of Happiness () Chan's new song is "Flower of Happiness" ()). Hiroshima University's 14th Pestalozzi Education Award was given to her in October.

In February 2006, her latest English-language album Forget Yourself, which also includes a duet with legendary Chinese singer Jackie Chan, was released in the United States.

Chan is set to debut three new Japanese singles and record an album in 2005 and 2008.

Chan had undergone breast-cancer therapy in a Tokyo hospital and is expected to recover fully.

She is a Roman Catholic.
