She is a first-generation American; her mother was English and from Liverpool; her father is of Hungarian Jewish and Czech descent; her father was of Hungarian Jewish and Czech descent. King's mother and her brother and sister joined her in acting at 6-months old in commercials, something she claims she has no influence over. She appeared in In 1965, In a supporting role, she appeared in the television film In the Wind, about age five. "As long as I kept my grades up, everyone was cool with it," she recalled.

She began training under Bill Esper, a student of acting instructor Sanford Meisner. She began to work in soap operas, Off-Broadway productions, and several television commercials, most notably Burger King ads. In addition, she appeared in the films Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Hair (1979). She appeared in Between the Lines (1977), a small supporting role. She studied art at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York during this period.

Queen was introduced by a mutual friend to producer Sean S. Cunningham in 1979, the horror film Friday the 13th. Cunningham believed that the King embodied Alice Hardy, the film's lead heroine, and that he portrayed her in the film. The 13th in November brought in nearly $60 million in worldwide sales on Friday.

Alice Hardy reprised her role in the sequel's Friday the 13th Part 2, in which the protagonist discovers her death. Following Friday's triumph, a male stalker set out to uncover areas she frequented, where she worked, and what lunch was served. In New York City, the man took Polaroid photographs of King and slipped under the door of her apartment, and at one point, broke into her apartment and defaced her artwork. On one occasion, the guy confronted her in her apartment and held a gun to her head. The assassination took place and was sentenced to time in prison, but the event traumaticized the King, causing her to leave the public eye. She made her last on-camera screen appearance at Downy in 1983, which she shot in 1983. King was hired as a stunt performer and background actor for the Ivan Reitman film Ghostbusters (1984), having been familiar with stunt coordinator Cliff Cudney.

She subsequently moved to London, where she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, learning voice and dance. After finishing her studies, she returned to the United States, settling in Los Angeles, where she met Richard Hassanein, the director of United Film Distribution, in Los Angeles. King resurfaced doing voice acting and ADR work, first for Mel Gibson's The Man Without a Face and the Lasse Hallström-directed drama What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (both 1993 and 1994). She continued to do voice work for several Hollywood films in the 1990's, including Philadelphia (1993), Wolf (1994), Cameron Crowe's Jerry Maguire (1996), and James Cameron's Titanic (1997). "Voiceover work saved me," she's remarked later. There's no doubt it came all around full circle, and I'm a more sympathetic and more able actor and performer."

She committed to the Sci-Fi/Horror film Psychic Experiment in 2009, marking her first on-screen film appearance in 27 years. She appeared in Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming, an unofficial sequel to the American horror film Silent Night (1974) and The Butterfly Room in 2012. In the forthcoming horror film William Froste and Theresa, the King is expected to portray Jackie Winters, an investigative reporter.

King served as both a winemaker and wine company coordinator in southern Oregon in 2010. In addition to paintings, she has also sold her own line of Friday the 13th-themed wines from the company, Crystal Lake Wines.

King resurrected her role as Alice Hardy in the medium-length horror film Jason Rising in 2021.
