Adrian Dunbar Life

Adrian Dunbar (born 1 August 1958) is an actor and director from Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, best known for his television and theatre work.

Dunbar co-wrote and starred in the 1991 film, Hear My Song, nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTA awards.He has played Superintendent Ted Hastings in the BBC One thriller Line of Duty since 2012.

He has also appeared as Alan Cox in The Jump, Martin Summers in Ashes to Ashes, Richard Plantagenet in The Hollow Crown, and as Father Flaherty in Broken.

Early life

Dunbar was born and brought up in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland, the eldest of seven siblings. He was educated at St Joseph's College, Enniskillen before attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Personal life

Dunbar has a daughter and stepson from his 1986 marriage to Australian actress Anna Nygh. He lives in Crouch End, North London. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Ulster in June 2009 in recognition of his services to acting.

Dunbar has appeared in films including My Left Foot, The Crying Game, and The General. He has appeared in films including Triggermen, Shooters, How Harry Became A Tree, Richard III, and Widows' Peak.

He appeared in the first episode of Cracker as an innocent murder suspect with amnesia, as well as the last episode of A Touch of Frost on television. He has appeared in a number of British films, including Tough Love, Inspector Morse, Kidnapped, Murphy's Law, Murder in Mind, Ashes to Ashes, and the Quatermass Experiment 2005.

The Shaughraun and Exiles at Dublin's Abbey Theatre; The Danton Affair at the Royal Shakespeare Company; and A Trinity of Two (as Oscar Wilde) at the Royal Court Theatre in Belfast; and Boeing Boeing (London, 2007). He has produced Philadelphia Here I Come!, a critically acclaimed production.

He appeared in and co-directed Brendan at the Chelsea by Janet Behan in 2008, portraying Brendan Behan. The performance was the first to be staged in the Naughton Studio in Belfast's new Lyric Theatre after it reopened in 2011, and was revived for a tour to Theatre Row in New York in September 2013.

In Coriolanus' BBC radio production, Tullus Aufidius appeared. He made a guest appearance in BBC Radio 4's Baldi, and Vermeer appeared on stage in a Girl with a pearl earring version.

In 2008, Dunbar appeared in the critically acclaimed The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce. In the remote rain-forests of north west Tasmania, he appeared alongside fellow Northern Irish actor Ciarán McMenamin. He appeared in the role of Superintendent Ted Hastings in the first series of the police procedural television series Line of Duty in 2012; he continued in this role for the remaining series.

Dunbar is also a stage producer who staged productions for the Enniskillen International Beckett Festival.

In the second series of Ashes to Ashes, he portrayed the enigmatic character Martin Summers. In 2014, he appeared as Walter, the title character in a BBC comedy drama.

Jim Hogan appeared on the Virgin Media Television original drama Blood in which Dunbar also appeared.

The Glasgow-born star's breakout role came in iconic film Restless Natives, where he played Will, one-half of a criminal duo who became modern highwaymen. He went on to portray the father of character Diane in Trainspotting and also starred as a property developer in an episode of Scottish sitcom Still Game. Fans and former colleagues paid tribute to Friell today. Former radio presenter Ronnie McGhie said: 'I'm totally shocked to hear that Scottish actor Vincent Friell has passed away. He was in many programmes, but it's his performance in the movie Restless Natives that he'll be remembered for. A wonderful film. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Vincent, you shall be missed.' Another fan said: 'Dear Vincent Friell you were so great. Funny as anything and a really clever actor. Such a loss.'
