Adel Taarabt Career

Club career

In Fez, Morocco, Taarabt was born. His family immigrated to Berre-l'Étang, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, at a young age. He started his lens career in 2004 and played 14 matches for RC Lens B in the Championnat de France amateur competition. During the 2006–07 season, he made his first appearance for Lens as a player.

On January 2, 2007, Taarabt signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a long-term loan, the club's commitment to bring him right into the first team to give him maximum playing time. In a 4-3 away win over West Ham United in an 87th-minute substitution for Pascal Chimbonda in his first senior appearance in a Spurs shirt within two months, he made his first senior appearance in a Spurs shirt. In a 1–0 loss at Chelsea, his only other appearance of his loan, he made, Teemu Tainio after 64 minutes.

On June 8, Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of Taarabt for the permanent. In a pre-season friendly against Stevenage Borough on July 7, he scored his first goal for Spurs. In the 4–0 victory over Derby County in the 2007–08 season, he made his first appearance in the 71st minute for Wayne Routledge. In a 4-3 victory at Upton Park, Dimitar Berbatov scored a crucial free kick, igniting wild scenes in the away end.

Taarabt was one of a group of players not issued a squad number by then boss Juande Ramos, and also barred from the first-team training ground at the start of the 2008–09 season. When Harry Redknapp took over team control, he was given his old number, but it was his first Premier League appearance of the season that season came in a goalless North London derby on February 8, 2009, when he was playing three minutes in place of Aaron Lennon.

Taarabt joined Queens Park Rangers on loan until the 2008–09 season, beginning on March 13. In a 2–1 victory over Bristol City, he scored his first goal for QPR. After suffering a knee injury that required surgery, his loan term was cut short.

Taarabt's season-long loan for the 2009–10 season began on July 23, 2009, and the club has returned to QPR for the 2009–10 season. In a match against Preston North End on October 1, Taarabt scored a "wonder strike" on a match against Preston North End. Within the QPR half, he dribbled 20 yards past three players and curled in a shot from 25 yards.

Taarabt could remain at QPR for the season as long as a Premier League club did not make a January transfer request. Spurs and QPR were unable to make the transfer permanent because they could not afford the £4.5 million value placed on Taarabt by Spurs.

In a interview in March 2010, Taarabt was described as regretful for signing for Tottenham Hotspur and not going to another club when I first arrived over." He wished he had signed for Arsenal rather than Spurs, but Spurs' Damien Comolli switched from being a scout to director of football at Spurs, according to him. He said he would have been given more opportunities to play for Arsenal, but his mentors, Armand Traoré and Abou Diaby, both played for Arsenal, said he would have been able to sign for Spurs. Taarabt went on to announce that he wants to sign for one of Spain's top four clubs next season: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, or Sevilla. I have been in touch with good teams, and I know they want me. Now I just have to pray that they will find a settlement with Tottenham Hotspur.

Taarabt signed a three-year deal with QPR on August 5th, 2010, for an undisclosed fee.

"The man who brought me to Tottenham was Damien Comolli," Taarabt said in January 2011. He was still at Arsenal. However, when I was supposed to go to Arsenal, he went to Tottenham Hotspur. 'Come to Tottenham.' We want to do what they do at Arsenal and bring the best young players in the country. You're going to have a great shot there.' I trusted him. This was a mistake, and I regret it. Tottenham wanted to do it like Arsenal, but it's a different time. I would have had a better chance at Arsenal. I will continue to progress with Arsène Wenger. He is a hero in France and one of the best managers in the world.

Taarabt was expected to make his QPR debut as a whole player when the club repaid the Moroccan for a reported £1 million. Tottenham's future transfer earnings would be paid in percentage, rather than the payments that had already been made. In 44 league appearances for the West London club this season, Taarabt scored 19 goals in 44 league appearances. Taarabt went on to win the Championship Player of the Year award and his second-place teammate Paddy Kenny, despite his indecisive skills and reputation for never failing the opposition defense for a matter of 90 minutes.

As a result of one of his cousins' deaths, Taarabt missed two games in March 2011. In the return match, Morocco's boss, Erik Gerets, decided to transfer Taarabt to the substitutes' bench. Taarabt decided not to attend the international championship and vowed not to play for his country again. However, several months later, Taarabt wanted to play for Morocco again, but Gerets reluctantly agreed that if Taarabt behaved irrationally, he would not play for his country while he was in charge.

During the season, there were some memorable performances against Cardiff City (an away 2–2 draw), where Taarabt took a brace against Cardiff City, scoring a wonder goal in the process. Taarabt scored the winner in the home match against the same opposition, bringing QPR back to the top of the Championship table.

Despite being a Tottenham player who had been a member of English football's top tier, Taarabt's first real foray into the Premier League came in 2011-12, the Spurs' starting lineup was not complete. Both QPR and Taarabt were optimistic at the start of the season, but suddenly came to rumors that he would leave, and his name was synonymous with Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli. Joey Barton's arrival in August transfer window, who was immediately installed as captain, was accompanied by his appointment as captain from Taarabt.

These causes had the unfortunate result of settling Taarabt, who was unable to replicate his form from the previous season. He had taken over 20 shots and yet scored zero goals by early November. He had often let his temper get the better of him before this. He was inserted at halftime during Fulham's 6–0 loss on October 2nd. Joey Barton was particularly vocal about his attitude, sparking retaliation from his colleagues, with Joey Barton being particularly vocal. Taraabt was officially omitted from the squad against Manchester City and Stoke City after being forced to leave at halftime for a poor showing in the 3–1 loss at Tottenham. During this time, rumors linked him to PSG, and Warnock even stated that if the right one came along, he would gladly accept an offer for Taraabt. Adel was named the best Arab player of 2011 by the Argélia Le Buteur newspaper.

Taraabt was on international service and suffered some minor injuries, which also kept him out of the team at this point. Warnock was highly critical of the player's agents during this period, and a large part of the player's debating at their feet was blamed on him. They advised him not to rethink the advice they had given him, but they regret that it is a shame. Adel will always make money, but he is better than that. I would be sad if he ends up making any money because I think he has a lot of talent." Through most of November, he was ruled out of the team, but his colleagues recovered, and he was praised for his efforts in the 2–0 loss to Manchester United on December 18th. He maintained his good results against Sunderland and Swansea City. Taarabt scored the first goal in QPR's victory over Arsenal on March 31st, and was also named Man of the Match. Taarabt won by scoring a long-range free-kick, the winning goal in a victory over his former club Tottenham Hotspur on April 21. In the midst of a second bookable offence, he was also shown his first red card in English football.

Taarabt agreed a new three-year deal with QPR on July 11, 2012, keeping him at the club until June 2016. After dribbling past two players, he scored his first goal of the season against West Ham United on October 1, 2012. With an elastic volley against West Bromwich Albion on October 6, he scored his second goal in three matches in three matches. He scored both goals in QPR's first victory of the 2012–13 season, a 2–1 win over Fulham in the second round, with a dribble ending with a finish outside of his foot. "I felt it was one of the all-time best shows," Taarabt's manager Harry Redknapp praised the Taarabt, adding, "It was one of the all-time best performances." Taarabt was playing in an unfamiliar striker role on January 2nd, QPR's second victory of the season, after a 1–0 away victory over Chelsea and assisting in the only goal, "Pelé-esque."

On August 7, 2013, Taarabt joined Fulham in Premier League on a season-long loan. He made his Fulham debut against Sunderland, where he played the full 90 minutes. On August 27, 2013 he scored his first goal for the club against Burton Albion in the League Cup.

Taarabt joined AC Milan until the end of the season on January 30, 2014, showing the Rossoneri's resurgent focus on the transfer market. In a 3–1 loss, he scored his first goal for Milan eight minutes into his debut against Napoli, having tackled the ball in his own half and dribbling halfway across the pitch to score from outside the box. In the first leg of the round of 16 against Atlético Madrid, he made his UEFA Champions League debut in the first leg of the tournament on February 19th.

Taarabt returned from his loan spells with QPR in the 2014 summer season, but he came on as a replacement in the away match against West Ham. QPR boss Harry Redknapp said after his team's home loss to Liverpool, "not injured." Responding to a journalist's query, "Taarabt is not injured." He's not fit for it. Unfortunately, he's not fit to play football. The other day, he was in a reserve game, and I'd rather run about more than he did. "I can't choose him." Taarabt said Redknapp was "making excuses because QPR is losing games," saying, "[M]aybe he wants me to make more tackles." I am not this kind of player."

Taarabt agreed to a five-year deal with Portuguese champions Benfica on a €4 million transfer fee on June 12, 2015. On January 10, 2017, he joined Genoa on a loan agreement until June 2018.

Taarabt returned to Benfica's reserve team in February 2019, making his debut in a 1–0 home victory over Tondela in Primeira Liga on Friday.

Taarabt played for Benfica as a consistent starter in an unfamiliar defensive midfield position during the 2019-20 season. Benfica's deal came to an end on September 1st 2022.

Taarabt joined Emirati club Al-Nasr SC on September 25, 2022.

International career

Taarabt played for France under the age of 16, 17 and under 18, but he opted to play for Morocco at senior level, saying, "I felt the time was right when I was given this opportunity." In a friendly against the Czech Republic in Casablanca on February 11, 2009, he played his first international match against Morocco. During Morocco's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier 2–1 loss to Gabon, he also appeared on March 29th.

In a friendly 2–0 win over Angola on 31 March 2009, Taarabt scored his first international goal on his first appearance. After breaking through the opposing defence in stoppage time, he scored his first goal in a competitive international match against Togo in 2010 World Cup qualification on September 6, 2009.

Taarabt's international career came to an end on June 3rd, the day after being dropped to the bench for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria. He reversed on his call and returned on October 9th for the final qualifier against Tanzania against Tanzania. Taarabt scored a free-kick that would end up being the winning goal and sealing Morocco's qualification. In a group stage performance, he appeared twice.

Morocco's head coach Rachid Taoussi barred Taarabt from Morocco's squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Taarabt was recalled to the national squad in September 2019 after five years without making international appearances. In a friendly match against Burkina Faso on September 6, he returned as a replacement. He was picked to start against Niger four days later and scored the only goal of the match for midfield partner Walid El Karti.
