Adam Zampa Career

Youth career

Zampa bowled medium speed as a child, but Cricket Australia had put limitations on how many overs pace bowlers were allowed to bowl in under-14 matches, so he decided to change his bowling style to leg spin, inspired by Australian Test cricketer Shane Warne. After playing a role in Australia's successful 2010 Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaign, Zampa made his way into Australia's under-19 team in 2009 and has earned his first deal with the Blues in 2010. Zampa took 11 wickets across both formats in two youth Test matches and eight youth ODIs.

Domestic career (2010–2016)

As a result of Zampa's youth in Australia, he was given a rookie deal with New South Wales in 2010, but he didn't have any chances to prove himself at state level because New South Wales also had a number of other successful spin bowlers, including Nathan Hauritz, Steve O'Keefe, and Steve Smith. He had a second shot at representing Australia before his first-class debut in the 2011 Hong Kong Cricket Sixes.

In the 2012-2013 Sheffield Shield season against Queensland, Zampa made his first-class debut for New South Wales. In a three-wicket victory, he took five wickets. Despite not having a big Bash League team until a week before BBL|02 began, he played for the Sydney Thunder and was highly rated by Trevor Hohns. He finished the season with three first-class matches, taking ten wickets at an average of 23 runs per wicket.

Since being offered to play for South Australia in both first-class and one-day matches, as well as the Adelaide Strikers, the Adelaide Strikers, have remained a favorite on the Twenty20 team. He was tempted by the promise that he would join South Australia's team after losing Test spinner Nathan Lyon to New South Wales. He spent three months at the Centre of Excellence during the 2013 winter before joining the South Australian squad for the 2013–14 season. Johan Botha, the captain of the South Australian side at the time, found the transfer to South Australia to be a good start in Zampa's career.

Despite South Australia's loss of the match to Western Australia, Zampa had an impressive showing in the 2014–15 Matador BBQs One-Day Cup, putting on a hat-trick and ending the match with a score of 4/18. Zampa joined the Redbacks for two more seasons in 2015, but the Melbourne Stars gave him more experience, where he will have the opportunity to play alongside international stars Michael Clarke and Kevin Pietersen.

To this point, the 2015–16 summer was the most fruitful of Zampa's career to date. He played in both List A cricket and Twenty2020 cricket, and in 2016, he was named in Australia's squad for both One Day Internationals and Twenty20 International cricket, but first-class cricket was lacking. He had a 4/48 record against Cricket Australia XI in the 2015–16 Matador BBQs One-Day Cup to help South Australia advance to the tournament's elimination final. In BBL|05, he was involved in an unusual dismissal, breaking out Peter Nevill with his nose.

He was purchased by the Welsh Fire for the 2022 season of The Hundred in April 2022.

International career (2016–present)

In the second match of the 2015–16 Chappell–Hadle Trophy series, he made his ODI debut on February 6, 2016. On March 4, 2016, he made his Twenty20 International debut for Australia against South Africa. Zampa made his first appearance in both the ODI and T20I squads for Australia. Before he made his T20I debut for Australia in South Africa, Zampa was selected in Australia's squad for the 2016 World Twenty2020. Despite how he was brought to the squad, he was Australia's top wicket taker with five wickets per year at an average of 13.80 and a 6.27 percent unemployment rate, including a good showing against Bangladesh with figures of 3/23.

With Zampa's ascension to Australia's national team, he also started to play in Twenty20 franchises as an overseas player. He took 6 wickets for 19 runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, ranking him third best show as a bowler in the IPL after 6/14 by Sohail Tanvir and 6/12 by Alzarri Joseph. In the 8th over Sunrisers Hyderabad's innings, Zampa bowled his first over for the match in the 8th over the course of the match, but the attack was called out immediately without taking a wicket. He wasn't allowed to return to action until the 16th century, in which he took one wicket. Captain MS Dhoni gave him an extended spell after his wicket, and he took two wickets in the 18th over and three more wickets in the 20th over, taking his total number to six. He was named man of the match for his efforts, and he also set the best bowling figures by a bowler in Twenty20 history in a losing cause. Zampa also competed in the Guyana Amazon Warriors, taking the most wickets out of all spin bowlers for the tournament, with 15 wickets on an average of 18.46.

After bowling well in the series opener and taking two wickets, Zampa was surprisingly dropped from Australia's Twenty20 team for the second match of a three-match series against Sri Lanka in 2016–17. Zampa's latest form revealed he was one of the best Twenty20 spin bowlers in the country, describing it as a "kick in the guts." Without Zampa Australia's participation in both the match and the series. For the final match of the series, Zampa was brought back to the side, and he was named the man of the match with a score of 3/25. Australia defeated the game by a score of 3/25.

Despite all of Zampa's victories in the shorter forms of cricket, he was still struggling to break into Australia's Test team. He was unable to come out in the Sheffield Shield as a result of South Australia's high pace, with Chadd Sayers and Kane Richardson taking all of the wickets themselves and leaving Zampa's chances to stand out. Australia played a Test series in India in early 2017, and former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming portrayed him as a potential addition to Australia's squad given his ability to bowl well on Indian pitches, but he was not included in the squad. Rather, Zampa continued playing in the Sheffield Shield, achieving his first five-wicket haul in a first-class innings as he took his first five wickets against Queensland in the first innings and then took another four wickets in the second innings to achieve his first ten-wicket haul in a first-class match.

Zampa was in Australia's squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, but he didn't have many chances to play because two of Australia's three group stage matches were cancelled, leaving Australia's finals out. He was selected in Australia's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. Zampa was selected in Australia's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in August 2021. Zampa scored his first five-wicket haul in T20I cricket on November 4th, 2021, in Australia's T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh.

Zampa took his 100th wicket in ODI cricket in March 2022, during the first match of the series against Pakistan.

He took his first ODI five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Cairns in September 2022.
