Adam Green Career

Feature film and television career

Green, who works within a select group of acquaintances, created the bulk of his 2000s projects. He had appeared in two seasons of television sitcom Holliston alongside seven theatrical feature films, including horror Hatchet (2006) and thriller Frozen (2010) by now. As a result, the director became a member of the Splat Pack, a group of filmmakers who brought back gore and splatter, including Eli Roth, Alexandre Aja, Neil Marshall, Rob Zombie, Greg McLean, and James Wan.

Unpublished, Coffee & Donuts is a semi-biographical, lighthearted romance about two friends, Adam and Steve, who are trying to introduce their morning radio station in the tiny town, while Adam is struggling to recover from a breakup. Green made the feature film for just $400, with equipment from the cable advertising facility where he was working at the time and recruiting volunteers for everything from casting to crew. Green appeared in the lead role, though other parts were played by Steven C. DeWitt Jr., Katie Bove, and Jeff Davison. This amateur film has not been widely distributed.

Touchstone Pictures acquired Coffee & Donuts, recruited Green as a writer, and turned the film into a UPN sitcom. The pilot episode, which was being produced by Tom Shady Acres, was cancelled, but Touchstone's rights stayed for the next five years. Following the regaining of the rights in 2009, there have been attempts to sell it to another network. However, the sitcom was cancelled once more. As Holliston and FEARnet were both re-developed, the original concept was completely re-developed (see subsection). Green has since stated his desire to commercialize the original film on his own, but he has also referred to issues such as the high cost of getting the soundtrack rights.

Hatchet (2006) is the first installment of Green's huge brand. The horror movie honors senior Americans and follows a group of tourists who take a swamp boat ride and become pursued by Victor Crowley's ghost. The film, which was released on September 7, 2007, was highly praised by some commentators and gained a worldwide horror fandom, resulting in three sequels for 2010, 2013, and 2017.

Spiral (2007) is Joel David Moore's and JD Boreing's epic, which Green co-directed. The tale follows an isolated telecommunications retailer (Moore), who befriends a new co-worker and then grapples with troubling past feelings, affecting his personal integrity. Critics praised Spiral as "nothing short of brilliant" and "the nearest thing you'll get to Hitchcock in this day and age." At the 2008 Santa Barbara Film Festival, the film received a Gold Vision Award.

Green was hired to write a screenplay for an animated Aquaman film that was not developed by Warners Bros.

Grace (2009) is Paul Solet's dramatic drama, which was created by Green (ArieScope Pictures), who discovered the project during Hatchet's festival tour. The tale tells the tale about a woman who loses her baby in the womb but who nevertheless goes on to life, only to discover that the baby can only survive on human blood. Jordan Laddd, Grace performed at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009 and was released in theaters and on DVD later this year.

Frozen (2010) is Green's low-budget thriller starring Kevin Zegers, Emma Bell, and Shawn Ashmore. On February 5, 2010, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was announced in North American theaters. Based on 16 evaluations, Metacritic rated it 45/100. "Writer/director Adam Green has the beginnings of an exciting, frightening yarn in Frozen, but neither the script nor the cast are strong enough to do it justice," Rotten Tomatoes' critical consensus states. On the other hand, some commentators were satisfied with the results. "A minimalist setup provides maximum terror in [this] nifty little chiller that tempers its cold terrain with an unexpectedly warm heart," Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times writes. In his New York Times column, Rex Reed shares more: "I was so afraid by this film that I chewed a whole pencil in half watching it."

Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris appear in Hatchet II (2010), the franchise's sequel. Green (Anchor Bay, MySpace), in press (Clegging Entertainment, Comic-Con, Frozen Films) and with credits (Adam Green's Hatchet II). The sequel premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival in 2010 and was shot at the beginning of the year. When distributor Dark Sky promised to bypass MPAA ratings' board, the theatrical release made headlines, and the unrated Hatchet II was released within hours, but it was immediately pulled out. AMC's official reason for the demise of AMC was a lack of results, but Green has hinted at controversies surrounding MPAA. Based on 11 reviews, Metacritic rated the film 49/100. Rotten Tomatoes has a 36% approval rating and an average score of 4.2/10 based on 33 reviews; the site's consensus states, Hatchet II strives for so-bad-it's-good territory but can't quite hack it."

As part of the 2011 comedy/horror anthology Chillerama, Green wrote and directed segment "The Diary of Anne Frankenstein" which includes four short films by four separate filmmakers. The parody "Anne Frankenstein" is shot in black and white and entirely in German to look and feel like a lost 1940's foreign film. Although Green cast real German speaking actors for all roles, Adolf Hitler's lead role is played by Joel David Moore, who does not know how to speak German and purposely fakes his way into the film by using a combination of gibberish and random words delivered to him by Green, including "Boba Fett," "OshKosh B'Gosh" and "Goldie Hawn." Kane Hodder portrays Meshugannah, a Hassidic Jewish interpretation of the classic Frankenstein monster, who ultimately opposes his master and kills him.

The sitcom Holliston, based on Green's life and largely based on Green's romantic comedy Coffee & Donuts, follows Adam (played by Joe Lynch), two young horror filmmakers in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, who are portrayed by a fellow genre director and real-life best friend, Joe Lynch). Together they work at a local cable television advertising station and struggle with fledgling careers, making ends meet and dealing with the opposite gender. Laura Ortiz (who plays Laura, Joe's mother), Corri English (who plays Corri, Adam and Joe's ex-girlfriend and the cause of his life), and GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (who plays Oderus, Adam's imagining alien friend who lives in his closet), and GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (who plays Lance Rockett, Adam and Joe's cross-dressing boss, who is still stuck in the 80's

Holliston was the first original series for FEARnet. Green wrote and directed the six episodes of season one of this series, mixing comedy, horror, and romance, and the network has referred to it as "Big Bang Theory meets Evil Dead 2." In September–October 2011, ArieScope Pictures produced the first season. The series was announced in Entertainment Weekly's January 13, 2012 issue, and it was confirmed on the FEARnet network on April 3, 2012, with a second season following after two episodes. Seth Green, John Landis, Kane Hodder, Ray Wise, Deanna Pappas, Derek Mears, Colton Dunn, Danielle Harris, John Ballard, Magda Apanewicz, and Tony Todd appear on the guest list, as well as Seth Green, John Landis, John Landis, Kane Hodder, Brian Posehn, Brian Posehn, Deanna Pappas, Deanna Pappas, John Landis In interviews, Green has described Holliston as his "most passionate of passion projects" and that the project took him over 13 years to bring to fruition.

Holliston went on an indefinite hiatus following cast member Dave Brockie's death and FEARnet's dissolution just weeks later. Holliston will return in July 2015 for a third season, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Hatchet III (2013) is BJ McDonnell's third feature of Green's franchise, starring Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, Derek Mears. The film was released in United States theaters and VOD on June 14, 2013. Green reassured followers, who were dissatisfied with the replacement's work, that he personally oversaw all development. Though Green has stated that Hatchet III is supposed to be the end of the story and that he never intended to make a trilogy, he has also speculated that this is just the conclusion to his Marybeth and Victor Crowley's tale, suggesting that future Hatchet films with a new plotline, different characters, and (probably) different storytellers behind the camera. Rotten Tomatoes received a 55% approval rating from 22 reviews, and Metacritic rated the film 25/100 based on eight reviews. All three films were shown in Hatchet Marathon on May 30, 2013, with the filmmaker making a donation to One Fund Boston as part of Green's three-day fundraiser to support victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

On GeekNation in May 2013, Green and Joe Lynch's free weekly filmmaker interview and film commentary podcast launched. The name and other inside jokes in the text refer to the creators' sitcom Holliston. Entertainment Weekly's "20 podcasts you should hear in 2015" (January 9, 2015; print issue #1345)) and used as curriculum in film schools such as UCLA and Emerson. According to reports, the podcast has over 500,000 weekly listeners around the world as of April 2015. Seth Green, Slash, Jordan Peele, Mick Garris, Kane Hodder, Bear McCreary, Danielle Harris, Beadh, Todd Farmer, Dave Owen, Stuart Hartley, Bill Moseley, and Christopher Columbus are among our past guests' favorites.

Digging Up the Marrow, Green's undercover project, was described as a reality-based dark fantasy of monsters created in collaboration between Green and well-known urban artist Alex Pardee. Production began in 2010 and was nearly complete in 2014. Greenbeard, the long-serving Green collaborator who has been with Green, since 1997, plays Detective William Dekker, an eccentric and enigmatic man who consults Green with the belief that monsters exist but that he knows where to find them.

The final version of Digging Up The Marrow premiered at FrightFest in London on August 23, 2014, after an unofficial preview of a work-in-progress cut at Harry Knowles' annual Butt-A-Thon. On February 20, 2015, the film was released in U.S. cinemas and VOD, as well as on DVD and Blu-ray. 53% of 15 poll respondents gave the film a positive review, according to Rotten Tomatoes; the average score is 5.7 percent. Based on eight reviews, Metacritic rated it 45/100.

Scary Sleepover, an internet series created and produced by Green and directed by Sean Becker, was released on March 6, 2015. Green's ArieScope Pictures Studio in Hollywood hosts a variety of characters from the horror genre for a slumber party. Green causes the horror heavyweights to open up about what really scares them in their real lives by dressing in pajamas, playing board games, eating junk food, watching movies, and laying on the floor with sleeping bags. Kane Hodder, Tiffany Shepis, Danielle Harris, Sid Haig, Derek Mears, Emma Bell, Bill Moseley, Zach Galligan, Jeffrey Reddick, and Tom Holland appeared in the first season's 14 episodes. On January 6, 2016, the second season aired with 14 more episodes starring such celebrities as Slash, Tony Todd, Dee Snider, Joe Lynch, Felissa Rose, Brea Grant, Lucky McKee, Todd Farmer, Kristina Klebe, and Neil Marshall. Adam Green, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Felissa Rose premiered on December 18, 2017. Green claims that there will not be a third season of "Scary Sleepover" for "quite some time" due to his busy schedule. In July 2020, Green introduced "Scary Sleepover" for a truncated third season of episodes. Doug Benson, Brian Quinn, Corri English, and Parry Shen were among the guests. On December 25, 2020, the series's finale premiered.

In this confessional-style series hosted by Corri English (Holliston), artists from both sides of the entertainment industry share their most frightening personal tales. The series is presented in an old-time black and white Twilight Zone-style style, with English as the Rod Serling-esque host that sets up each week's true tale. The film premiered in London four days later (August 26, 2017) as part of UK FrightFest, where it received yet another standing ovation at FrightFest for the second time in the festival's 18-year history. Green took the film on a 52-city world tour throughout the fall of 2017 ahead of its home video debut on February 6, 2018. Kane Hodder, Parry Shen, Laura Ortiz, Brian Quinn, Brian Quinn, Dave Sheridan, Felissa Rose, and Tiffany Shepis appear in the film.

For Friday, the 13th, Green wrote "The Jarvis Tapes": The Game (2017). The 13 audio tapes chronicle the untold story of the Tommy Jarvis character from parts 4, 5, and 6 of the film franchise, as well as filling up the gaps about the character's appearances in and after the films he appeared in. The tapes were released into the video game on October 13, 2017, and fans who enjoyed learning the various Easter eggs that Green put into his scripts tying Tommy Jarvis to other well-known horror franchises were eager to hear about them. The tapes include references to the horror IPs. A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Shocker, Hatchet, and the Encounter is on display at 3 a.m. Elm Street, Halloween, Shocker, Hatchet, and E.T. The Rise of Leslie Vernon and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was released as a result of Green's dog, Arwen,'s nod.

On September 18, 2018, the film was released as a surprise gift for Green's supporters and was available on ArieScope.com and ArieScope's official YouTube channel. The series includes all 20 years of Halloween shorts, including viral hits such as 2008's The Tivo, 2009's Driving Lessons, and 2015's Monster Problems. The documentary, made by Green and the ArieScope team of interns/assistants, stars ArieScope short film veterans Kane Hodder, Joel Moore, Paul Solet, Sid Haig, Brea Grant, and Laura Ortiz.

1492 Pictures is a pioneering adventure film. Killer Pizza is a sleight of evil. Toby McGill, a sixteen-year-old boy who starts a summer job at a tense Cape Cod pizza parlor, only to discover that the restaurant is actually a front for a top-secret monster hunting group, based on Greg Taylor's children book of the same name. Toby, who has been recruited into a band of heroic misfits, spends his summer combating ferocious monsters and saving the world from imminent destruction by a mythical and deadly monster prophecy.

Music career

Green formed Haddonfield, a hard rock and metal band formed in 1998, which he fronted as the lead singer. The band was on the back burner for several years until Green's film career took off and relocated him to Los Angeles in the 2000s, putting the band as a major regional draw in the Boston area. Green had made Haddonfield fully operational once more on Saturday, and that the band had signed Megadeth bassist David Ellefson's EMP Label Group, who would release the band's debut album Ghosts of Salem in conjunction with Green's own imprint label ArieScope Records, on July 24, 2017. On September 15, 2017, Ghosts of Salem was released digitally around the world, with the physical CD version and a limited edition vinyl version appearing in stores just one month later on October 13, 2017. On October 14, 2017, Haddonfield paid a visit to the Worcester Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts, where it also featured Ministry, Superjoint Ritual, DevilDriver, and Motionless in White.

Chris Permatteo, Haddonfield's bass player, died of natural causes on July 11, 2019. When Green spoke about Permatteo's death on The Movie Crypt podcast the following Monday, he said that Haddonfield would not continue to perform their songs and that they would never perform their songs on stage again.
