Abraham Charles Vigoda (February 24, 1921 – January 26, 2016) was an American actor best known for his portrayals of Salvatore Tessio in The Godfather (1972) and Fish (1977-1978) and Fish (1978-1978).
Early life
Vigoda was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 24, 1921, the son of Samuel Vigoda and Lena Moses, Russian immigrants. Hy and Bill, his father, was a tailor who had two other sons. The latter was a comic book artist who drew for the Archie Comics franchise and others in the 1940s. Vigoda worked as a printer before enlisting in the US Army in 1943, fighting in World War II. He studied on the GI Bill at the American Theatre Wing after his military service. He began working in radio and made his television debut in a live drama series Studio One in the late 1940s.
Personal life
Vigoda and his first wife Sonja Gohlke had just one child, Carol. The marriage ended in divorce. Beatrice Schy's second marriage lasted from 1968 to her death in 1992.
Vigoda loved handball and said in an interview that he was "almost" a champion at the sport in his youth.
Career
Vigoda began performing in his 20s while working with the American Theatre Wing. In 1947, he began his career as a professional actor.
He gained notability in the 1960s with his appearance in Broadway plays including Marat/Sade (1967), depicting Mad Animal; Inquest (1969), portraying Abraham Lincoln.
Salvatore Tessio in The Godfather (1972) was his best known film role. In a flashback sequence at the end of the film, he appeared briefly in The Godfather Part II. Vigoda landed the role of Tessio in a "open call" in which actors who did not have agents could attend an audition, according to Francis Ford Coppola's remarks on the DVD's widescreen version.
