Abdullah Abdullah Life

Abdullah Abdullah (born 5 September 1960) is an Afghan politician who has served as Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan since September 2014.

He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from October 2001 to April 2005.

Before that, he was a senior member of the Northern Alliance serving as an advisor to Ahmad Shah Massoud.

He served as a medical doctor in the late 1990s. In the 2009 Afghan presidential election, Abdullah ran against President Hamid Karzai, finishing in second place with 30.5% of the total votes.

He founded the Coalition for Change and Hope (now the National Coalition of Afghanistan), one of Afghanistan's most influential political parties.

In 2011, the National Coalition of Afghanistan was formed.

He ran again in the 2014 presidential election, this time in the second round, receiving 56% of the total vote.

Ashraf Ghani, his closest rival, had obtained 35% of the vote.

Due to signs of fraud, the results of the second round were highly contested, resulting in a deadlock.

Despite the controversies surrounding the results of the second round of elections, the final notified result of the Independent election commission of Afghanistan shows that Ashraf Ghani received 56.3 percent of the votes, while Abdullah gained 46.7 percent.

Following months of negotiations and US mediation, the two candidates formed a national unity government in which Abdullah serves as the Prime Minister of Afghanistan's Islamic Republic.

Early life

Abdullah was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the second district of Krte Parwn. He is the son of a Pashtun father, Ghulam Mahmaryalay, of the Kandahar area, and a Tajik mother from Panjshir. He spent his youth in Panjshir Province, Kandahar, and Kabul, where his father was working as an administrator in the land survey and later the audit section of the Prime Minister's office. During King Zahir Shah's reign, his father served as a senator during his final years. Abdullah has seven sisters and two brothers. During the Panjshir rebellion, his nephew, Mohammad Fahim Dashty, was the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan's spokesperson.

Abdullah had only known first name before he became a government minister, and demands from Western newspaper editors for a family name prompted him to use the full name "Abdullah Abdullah." Abdullah is married with three children and a boy.

Abdullah Abdullah Career

Education and medical career

Abdullah graduated from Naderia High School in 1976. He studied ophthalmology at Kabul University's Department of Medicine, where he obtained a MBBS degree in 1983. Since graduating, he spent several months as a resident ophthalmologist at Kabul's National Organisation for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation (NOOR). He travelled to Pakistan, where he spent more than a year in Peshawar's Syed Jamaluddin Afghan Eye Hospital for Afghan Refugees.

Early political career

Abdullah returned to Afghanistan in 1985 to fight the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and migrated to Panjshir. He took over the Panjshir Resistance Front's Health Department in September, coordinating treatments and health care for the resistance fighters and civilian civilians. Ahmad Shah Massoud, the mujahideen commander, became a close associate and advisor.

The Peshawar Accord established Afghanistan with a provisional government led by Burhanuddin Rabbani after the fall of the communist government in 1992. Abdullah was appointed chief of staff and spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense.

The Taliban took power in Kabul and 90% of the region on September 27, 1996, with military assistance from Pakistan, and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance, also known as the United Islamic Front, was established under Ahmad Shah Massoud's leadership. Russia, Iran, and India all helped with the Northern Alliance. Abdullah has been the UN Front's Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Islamic State of Afghanistan's members of the UN Front, including Defense Minister Ahmad Shah Massoud and Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, remained Afghanistan's internationally recognised government. Only three nations – Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and the UAE – recognized the Taliban government.

Abdullah and Ahmad Shah Massoud travelled to Brussels in early 2001, where Massoud told the European Parliament that the international community must help Afghanistan's people. When Massoud said that the Taliban and al-Qaeda had "a very wrong interpretation of Islam" and that without Pakistan and Bin Laden's help, the Taliban will not be able to sustain their military campaign for up to a year.
