Derek Aaron Ruell (born June 23, 1976 in Fresno, California), is an American filmmaker and photographer.

He is best known for his role as Kip Dynamite in the Indie film Napoleon Dynamite.

Early life and education

Ruell was born in Fresno, California, and raised in a Mormon family in nearby Clovis. Ruell studied film at Brigham Young University after graduating from Clovis West High School.

Personal life

Ruell and his partner, Yuka, were among the Los Angeles Latebirds, a Moped Army branch at one time. Since being raised in Pasadena, California, the couple now reside in Portland, Oregon.

Career

Ruell is a natural commercial director and photographer. Sanctuary in Los Angeles represents him as a director. By Shoot magazine in 2009, he was named one of the world's top new directors, and Creativity named him "one of the top emerging directors to know right now." He has produced commercials for companies like T-Mobile, Nintendo, Coke, and Burger King.

Everything's Gone Green and Mary, which he wrote and directed, was the first filmmaker to have two films at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

Ruell is best known for his role in Napoleon Dynamite's film Kipland Dynamite. He appeared in On the Road with Judas, which premiered in the 2007 Sundance Film Festival's Dramatic Competition section. Ruell was a successful New York businessman who lived out of double life as a computer robber.
