Aaron Jay Kernis Life

Aaron Jay Kernis (born January 15, 1960) is a Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning American composer who works with Yale School of Music faculty.

Kernis spent 15 years as the Minnesota Orchestra's music advisor and as the head of the Minnesota Orchestra's Composers' Institute, and currently is the Workshop Director of the Nashville Symphony Composer Lab.

During his thirty-five-year career, he has received numerous awards and accolades.

He and his partner, pianist Evelyne Luest, and their two children live in New York City.

Background, early life, and education

Aaron Jay Kernis was born in Philadelphia and grew up in neighboring Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania. He began his musical career by playing the violin and piano. He began writing at the age of 13, and he was given three BMI Foundation Student Composers Awards during his time as a student. He studied composition with John Adams at the San Francisco Conservatory; Charles Wuorinen at the Manhattan School of Music; and Morton Subotnick, Bernard Rands, and Jacob Druckman at Yale University. His diverse collection of teachers and time on both the east and west coasts help to define his eclectic musical style, which blends minimalism with post-Romanticism.
